Oktoberfest originated in the 1800s, celebrating the marriage of the Bavarian King, Max Joseph (aka King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. About five days after the marriage, a large festival was outside one of the gates leading to Munich. Since that time the fest was moved to late September (because of warmer weather), and millions from around the world now flock to the event each year. We finally made it to Oktoberfest, and what a day it was! We had been told that it was crowded and we probably couldn't get a seat--and that they only served those sitting. We went into the Hippodrom tent first, and luckily found a table where they made room for us, and the older couple seen in the picture "adopted" us. Their advice was to buy just one beer and share, as the beers were big and strong, but of course we knew better. We had (we think) three beers each, and it was way too many...we felt very fortunate to be able to tell the cab driver where to take us at the end of the night.
